Students have been learning all about WATER! We have learned about how molecules are arranged in the different states of water (solid/ice; liquid/water; gas/water vapor). They have learned about boiling and freezing points for water. They have learned the water cycle process...evaporation/condensation/precipitation/collection.

Friday we worked on partial quotient division while trying to calculate the yearly rainfall total (in feet, yards and meters) of one of the worlds rainiest places - located in the United States - Mount Waiʻaleʻale. Mount Wai'ale'ale (pronounced [weɪˈʔɐleˈʔɐle] in Hawaiian, literally, "rippling water" or "overflowing water"  is at an elevation of 5,148 feet (1,569 m), is a shield volcano and the second highest point on the island of Kauaʻi in the Hawaiian Islands. Averaging more than 426 inches (10,800 mm) of rain a year since 1912, with a record 683 inches (17,300 mm) in 1982, its summit is the rainiest spot on earth.

Here is a picture of Mount Waialeale.

We also began learning about the different kinds of precipitation. This week we will continue with precipitation. We will have a QUIZ on Wednesday, 9/1, over precipitation. There is a new precipitation sheet located in the note area. We will also begin learning about clouds.

Thank you for sending in coat hangers! We will be using these for a project in the future.

Don't forget picture day is Monday, 8/30. *Monday only - meet in your homeroom classroom instead of the gym because of picture day.

Next Monday is Labor Day Holiday - No School!

Volunteer Opportunities:

If you have old nature related magazines that our students can cut up please consider donating them to our classroom. (Examples include Birds in Bloom, Gardening, National Geographic etc. Please do not send in magazines like Red Book, Better Homes, etc. - only nature related magazines please!

We would love to get puzzles (no more than 300 pieces), board games (scrabble, boggle, sequence, decks of cards, etc.) Many of these games can be found at the good will for very inexpensive cost since some of these games get pretty expensive new.  Used childrens movies (vcr or dvd) and childrens books (2-4th grade reading level), interesting nonfiction books about nature, geography, history, etc. that are educational are also appreciated. Additional ideas include easy craft items like markers, white paper, play dough, etc to have for the classroom down time.

Please email me if you can assist with any of these projects.

Scholastic Book Orders Forms can now be viewed online. You can order online using a credit card by going to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs and our class username is JudyOsborneKCS and our password is ClubOrders     **For every online book club order we earn a FREE book for the classroom!
