Parents are welcome to shop at any time, and the hours are listed above.  Students will not be allowed to shop during carpool, unless they are with a parent.  We will have gift certificates available for purchase, and they make a great end of year gift for teachers because they get double the books!  Teachers will also have wish stacks of books they would like for their classrooms.

We always participate in the All for Books program which provides books to our students, and the money we raise is matched by Scholastic to provide books to students in need.  For this fair, we are having a $1 NUT Pass on Friday, April 27th to raise money for All for Books.  We will also be having a coin drive.  All money raised will be used to provide book fair reward coupons for 4th and 5th grade 3rd quarter Honor Roll students and buy books for our classrooms.  Our goal is $1,000.
Each homeroom will be able to use the money they raise from the coin drive to buy books for their classroom.

We need a lot of volunteers to have a successful book fair and help the students with the buy one, get one free concept.  We are still in need of a lot of volunteers.  The teacher who has the most volunteers will receive a $25 gift certificate to the book fair ($50 in value, due to BOGO).  To volunteer, visit

Project Based Learning

Dear Parents,

As we continue with Problem Based Learning, Kindergarten students have been given the STEM problem for this month: How can we collect and sort rocks on our playground to design a play space for K-1 students and make it safer?

Some of the classrooms came up with the following solutions:

  1. Collect and sort the rocks

  2. Use donated tires to sort and house the rocks

  3. Create a bed of rocks where they can use dump trucks, bulldozers, pails and shovels to move the rocks

  4. Create a play space with just sand

The children have started designing and putting up posters around the school to ask for donated trucks, pails and shovels.

We are asking parents and staff to donate the following:

  1. Bags of Pea Pebbles to pour into the rock bed, bags of play sand, and weed fabric to cover the bottom layers. If you would rather purchase the bag of sand or pea pebbles and drop off that is also an option.

  2. Donate any old trucks, bulldozers, dump trucks, pails or shovels you might have at home

By the end of the unit, students will understand the STEM design loop and will be able communicate their understanding of the properties of rocks and soil, and sand. There will also be a new play area for all of your children to explore! Thank you for your support on this exciting STEM project!!!!

The Kindergarten Team

Please email Mrs. Haklik or Ms. Bailey with any questions.

This Friday, students may pay $1 to participate in the N.U.T. (No Uniform Today) Pass.

All proceeds will be used for the All for Books program, in conjunction with our upcoming book fair.

Scholastic also matches the amount we raise to buy books for schools in need.  More information on All for Books

Students must wear school appropriate clothing, and no open toed shoes.  Money should be turned into homeroom teachers.

Additional order forms are available at the front office.

Parent Surveys

Greeting KCSMA families,

As I mentioned in this month’s Principal’s Pen, there are two additional surveys that we need for you to complete as soon as possible. The first is from a consulting firm that is working with our Governing Board.  They really need your feedback to assist with the planning for the direction of our school.

The second is from the Georgia Department of Education. This information will be used in the calculation of our school rating, CCRPI (College and Career Readiness Performance Index).

Please try to complete both by the end of the Mid-Winter Break.  Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Dr. James McNealey

Winter STEM Challenge

KCSMA STEM Challenge Winter 2018
Due February 14, 2018
This is to be completed at home and will be displayed and judged during KCSMA Engineering and Physics Night on Thursday, February 15, 2018.
Each grade level will present fun and challenging engineering and physics activities. In addition to the grade level activities, we invite all students to participate in an at-home STEM Challenge.
The STEM Challenge: Marble Roller Coaster or Gravity Driven Racetrack
You may work individually, with a friend, with a team, or with your family. There will be prizes for the top three entries.
• Size: Entries must be able to be carried by the student, without assistance. Roller coasters must use standard sized marbles.
• Please create your entry using recycled/repurposed materials. Please keep purchases to a bare minimum, and instead, use your creativity.
◦ Example of materials: Foam water pipe can be cut in half, length-wise, leaving a flexible, U-shaped track that can be taped together to lengthen, and twisted and looped for an exciting ride.
• Students should do the majority of the work, from designing to finding materials. Parents may help with the execution, but students should be doing the bulk of the work.
• Bring your game in by or on Wednesday, February 14, 2018. Show your project to your teacher for credit, then bring it down to the media center for all to see!
• P.S. Rumor has it that all teachers are going to be offering up special rewards for any of their students who participate, so go and ask them if they haven’t told you!
On Thursday, February 15, during STEM Night, the top 3 projects will be chosen by attendees. Each of the top 3 projects will earn a fabulous prize from Mr. Donnelly’s STEM closet!

Community Outreach

Happy Wednesday Parents!!!

We are happy to announce a huge Community Outreach Project that your students learned about this morning in Morning Meeting.  We discussed with the students that our community does a wonderful job helping us, so this is our chance to help our community!

We are joining forces with the Ronald McDonald Organization and are asking everyone to collect their can tabs.  For every gallon full of can tabs, it helps a child and their family with treatment or living expenses during their stay.  We have the opportunity to truly make an impact for these families during these hard times.

Come March, we will send out a date for April to go deliver these to the Ronald McDonald House in Atlanta.  They have asked to wait until closer to April to set our date.  To be clear, this will be all volunteer.  Whoever wants to go, will get to go and help deliver these.  Gallon jugs will be placed in the hallway entering the school with grade levels on them.  Please have your student drop them off in the mornings.  We will keep a chart of how many each grade level fills up.  The winning grade will receive an ice cream social!

Help us give back to our community!

For more information, please follow the link below.  If you have any questions, please email

STEM Garden

Good Morning KCSMA Family and Friends!!!

We wish you all well!!  We would like to take a few minutes to give you an update on our Fun Run Success!  Thanks to your ambition and drive to raise donations for our school, we are able to use $1600 for STEM materials, curriculum, and projects.  To say we are excited, is an understatement!  Some of you may not know this, but we started a project at the end of the 2017 school year that required your students to design a Sensory STEM Garden.  Your children did an amazing job!  Attached, you will find some pictures of their designs.  They were to use their imagination to design a garden with recycled materials located in various locations around the school.  Now that we know what they want, our next step is to purchase materials.  Below is a list of priority items we would like to purchase.  There is also a list of items you can start collecting that can be bought in at any time.  We are looking to implement our designs as soon as we can.  Of course, we are not able to implement everything right away, but your children are just as pumped as we are and we want to get going as soon as possible.  If you have access or would like to donate something from our priority list, we would appreciate it greatly.  The more donations we get for these items, the more the fundraiser earnings will get to go to curriculum and materials in the classroom.  Please email any questions regarding this project to  Thank you again for working so hard to help make our school a better learning environment for your children!

With thanks,

The STEM Committee

Priority Items:

  • 4 x 4 block wood pieces
  • tape (masking, painters, scotch, duct)
  • hot glue guns and glue refill (teachers will be the only one using these)
  • pvc pipes
  • toy cars, trucks, and other transportation items
  • paint
  • old tires (no wires poking out)
  • string/yarn/tent cable
  • cable ties

Donations to Collect at Home:

  • snack containers (Poptarts, cereal bars, muffins, etc)
  • cereal boxes
  • shoe boxes
  • milk gallons
  • pots and pans
  • soup cans
  • plastic bottle tops
  • shampoo and conditioner containers
  • paper towel rolls
  • brown paper bags

*This list is not limited to any other materials your children feel can be used for designing our garden.  Remember, we have many areas we are working with, so we will need lots of materials to implement all of the creative ideas your children came up with.

Principal's Pen- Carpool

September 7, 2017                                                                                                                                                                          Carpool

Greetings KCSMA families,

Thank you all for your cooperation with the changes that were made for morning and afternoon carpool. Even though our enrollment is down, we are still pushing anywhere between 400 and 500 cars through the property each morning and afternoon. Our reduction in students resulted in a reduction in staff; specifically support staff members that are available to monitor arrival and dismissal.  Your child’s safe arrival and dismissal is our top priority. Please note the following tips that can help make everyone’s experience a positive one when dropping off and picking up children:

  • Students can be dropped off at our Before School Program as early as 6am for $4 per day.
  • It seems the bulk of traffic occurs between 7:30 and 7:50 each morning, increasing in volume each minute. Whether we drop off at the back or the front, there will be a back up of cars if everyone is trying to drop off at the last minute.
  • Please have your child sitting at the right side of the car so they can exit on the sidewalk and not the street.
  • If you have to attend to last minute details (uniform/ hair check, back pack check, etc.), please park in the lot and take care of those tasks. The line is delayed when students aren’t ready go get out when the door is opened for them.
  • We have students that come from all areas of Cobb County attending our school. We also have staff that comes from all over the metro Atlanta area and some travel from outside the metro. When unforeseen traffic issues delay staff, we have to pull staff from the carpool line to monitor homeroom classes.
  • Some of our babies were getting caught in the hallway traffic when we were dismissing to the front and back. The result is a backed up car line while we find the child to send them to the appropriate pick up spot. Now, all traffic flows to the front.
  • Again, all students can’t be picked up at the same time (2:45). We have cars that are in line for dismissal as early as 1:30, which starts the back up to Cobb Parkway.
  • A few fender benders were reported when parents were trying to merge from the front and back pickup as well as merging onto busy Cobb Parkway. Having one flow of traffic helps to avoid these mishaps.
  • Many parents drop off their children on the way to work. If you can, please try to drop off your child between 7am and 7:30am when there are considerably fewer cars.

I would like to give the new route a few more days to work before going back to the old way of using two lines.  I will communicate the change on Tuesday, September 12 if we need to go back to the original carpool process. Since we do not have any bus service, carpool will never be ideal for every family. Please support our efforts in making sure everyone gets on and off campus as quickly as possible. This can only work with your cooperation.

With children in mind,

Dr. James McNealey

  • If you would like to check your child out and watch the eclipse on our property, you we will have early check out between 1:50 and 2:15.
  • Afternoon car pool will start at 3:15pm and end at 4:00pm.

Because of the high risk of viewing a solar eclipse without the appropriate eye protection, we will not be taking students out of the building. Students will participate in eclipse-focused activities throughout the day all over the building. We will view the actual eclipse online. The current weather forecast does is not favorable for viewing the eclipse outside, but please continue to monitor the weather on your favorite news station.

If weather permits, we do have 150 pair of approved eclipse glasses for sale – one for $3, two for $5 – cash only.

Principal's Pen- July 2017

July 2017

Greetings KCSMA families,

I hope that you are all enjoying this hot July weather! I am excited to join your family as the Principal of Kennesaw Charter Science and Math Academy. I will submit to you a monthly memo that will keep you informed of the many activities that will occur this school year. To get us started, here are a few reminders:

  • School starts bright and early at 7:50AM on Monday, July 31. Every effort should be made to have students inside the building before this time. With the families of over 800 students dropping them off, this will not be possible if you try to arrive after 7:40AM. Excessive tardies will be addressed on an individual basis. Look for an attendance protocol during Meet and Greet. We will continue with our Before School Program beginning at 6AM and carpool drop-off at 7AM.  Pick up starts promptly at 2:45. We will attempt to relieve traffic jams by requesting that specific car tags arrive at designated times. This information will also be available at Meet and Greet.
  • On Thursday, July 27, we invite you out to our Meet and Greet from 3:30 – 5:30 for our 3rd – 5th graders and 5:30 – 7:30 for our Kindergarten – 2nd The Kindergarten teachers will host an informational meeting for new parents from 5:00 – 5:30 in their classrooms. Please bring your checkbooks and other forms of payment for school lunch, Before and After School Programs and Clubs.
  • KCSMA will continue to be a uniform school. The expectation for students enrolled is that everyone is in uniform everyday. More information can be found on our website in the PARENT section.
  • Student supply lists are on the school website. As we continue to move forward toward STEM accreditation, please look for information about general household items that can be used in projects and experiments.
  • Calling all fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, uncles and all other father figures! KCSMA will participate in the Million Father March on the first day of school. This program, initiated by the Black Star Project out of Chicago, IL promotes the engagement of fathers and father figures in the education of their children. We invite you to come walk your child to class, meet their teacher and sign up for volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Watch our website and Facebook page for the official flyer.
  • Mark your calendar for August 21. We will adjust our school day back by 30 minutes in order to witness the first total solar eclipse in 38 years at 2:36PM. Morning carpool will begin at 7:30 and afternoon carpool will begin at 3:15. Please visit our website for detailed information.

See you soon ….

Dr. James McNealey

Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to our Teacher of the Year Mrs. Berlinda Bell!

Principal's Monthly Scroll

Dear Parents and Families,

I hope your weekend was restful and pollen free.

Thank you for your support on Comcast Cares Day.  You will notice some positive changes on campus as you drive through carpool.  Thanks to all the employees of Comcast, KCSMA staff and awesome families for spending your Saturday helping spread mulch, pine straw, erecting basketball goals, building picnic tables, planting flowers and more.

The first week of testing went very well.  Teachers ensured that your student received extra movement time once testing was over.  While walking through the building I was extremely impressed with the number of students who were focusing, using their testing strategies, and practicing their relaxation breathing/stretching.  KCSMA students were ready for this test, and most students gave it their personal best.  I expect this week to be nothing short of successful as well.

Congratulations to the KCSMA Hydroponic Garden Club partially sponsored by Cobb County Master Gardeners.  We placed 3rd overall in the International Competition for Educational Gardening.

Field Day will soon be here.  The date is Thursday, May 11th for K-2nd and Friday, May 12th for 3rd-5th.       .  Field Day is one of the best days of the year for our students.  Coach Ensor works hard to ensure the students have a great time.  Please remind your student that those who receive office referrals from this point on, will not be eligible to attend Field Day.  Outstanding balances for lunch or for BASP must be taken care before Field Day as well, in order for your student to participate.

We are going to be busy every day until the last day of school.  Re-tests are actually scheduled in the county for the last two half days of school.  I will keep you updated on this as the county might receive a waiver for re-testing.  If not, we will be re-testing on those last 2 days.

Other important dates include:

Monday, May 22nd - Regular school Hours

Tuesday, May 23rd - Half Day, Carpool Starts at 11:40

Wednesday, May 24th – Last Day of School, Report Cards Sent Home with Students,

Carpool Starts at 11:40

Thank you for your passion for charter schools and your support for KCSMA.

Wishing you well,

Mrs. Frey

Outstanding Balances

Parents and Families,

This week you may receive statements from School Nutrition, Before/Afterschool Program, or the Media Center regarding outstanding balances.

All balances must be paid in full by May 5th.

Students with outstanding balances will not be allowed to participate in non-instructional events and activities such as Field Day and Graduation.

Report grades will be sent home on May 24th (last day of school).

If outstanding balances remain on any school or BASP account, you may pay during summer office hours and pick up the report card at that time.

Mrs. Frey

GA STEM DAY - May 5, 2017

The 5th annual Georgia STEM Day will take place on May 5, 2017, and we plan to be a part of it! STEM skills are vital for students who want to be successful in our 21st century workforce, and being part of Georgia STEM Day is just one more way to get students excited about a future STEM career.

We have two school-wide activities planned. We will have a 21st century skill activity that focuses on creating a collaborative painting and an engineering activity that focuses on the physics of water slides!

We are collecting bulk materials for this whole-school effort and could use help from our KCSMA family.  If you can donate any of the items, please go ahead and send them in now so we can take inventory and adjust our activities if needed.   Send them in with your child marked as STEM DAY.  Here is the sign-up:

Thank you for your continued support.

STEM NUT Pass on Friday

It's last minute but we need your help!
We would like to send several teachers to visit STEM workshops at local schools in May and you can help support this effort by participating in a last minute NUT pass this Friday.  We are hoping to raise about $500 to cover the needed costs for this efffort.  Have your student pay $1 to be out of uniform and wear their favorite STEM inspired shirt.  It can be STAR WARS, Minecraft, or anything you can relate to science, math, engineering or technology.  It is ok to be creative with the connection, so have fun with it and make sure your child can tell us how it relates if we catch them in the hall… it might be worth a prize 😉  Thank you for your support.

No Visitors During Testing

Good Morning Knights!

A few reminders for the upcoming weeks:

3rd, 4th & 5th Grade – Milestones Testing

4th Annual Coach's Fun Run

Parents! This year’s main fundraiser is the 4th Annual Coach’s Fun Run! It’s a 9-day program that kicks off with a Pep Rally on Friday, March 10. Then families will have time to get pledges for every lap your student runs (30-35 laps), and we’ll celebrate at the Fun Run on March 24th.  With our big goal to raise funds to support high quality, hands on STEM educational experiences, technology, and our growing campus, we asked the Fun Run experts at Boosterthon to power our Fun Run and make it more profitable, easier, and fun.

Students will also experience an amazing character theme, BACKYARD BOX OFFICE! It’s a movie theme all about making a difference by getting into character. Our students will learn from five REAL kid difference-makers. From inventors, to world-class speakers, to business owners, to world-record holders, these five kids will inspire our students to practice the five “Character Acts” and make a difference in our community

Donations will go toward STEM and to the entire 9-day experience. So please help our school by reaching out to sponsors. Also, all families are invited to come out and cheer on your student at the Fun Run on March 24th!  More details to come. Thank you for your support!

Principal's Monthly Scroll- January 2017

Dear Parents and Families,

We welcomed lots of sleepy-eyed children back to school last Thursday morning.  The focus last week was strictly on letting your student know how much we missed them over the break, and allowing them to renew friendships, reconnect with their school family.  KCSMA students also met new friends, as several students transitioned over the holidays, starting their first day of school with us.

I’d like to take a minute to thank you for the wonderful cards, photos and gifts I received prior to and during the holiday break.  The support and kindness from KCSMA parents continues to be something not common at most schools, and it is certainly something for which the staff and I are thankful.

Student Intent to Return forms will be coming home today.  The number of students allowed into Lottery depends on current parent responses to the Intent to Return form.  It is so very important that we know by February if:

1) your student will definitely be returning to KCSMA in the fall

2) if a sibling who has not yet attended KCSMA will be coming to KCSMA in the fall

3) if you know you will not be returning, or if you are considering other schools.

Parent responses to Intent Forms guide our budgeting plans and inform KCSMA personnel needs for the upcoming year, so please answer as accurately as you can, and return the forms as quickly as possible.

Please try to attend BINGO Night tomorrow, January 12th, sponsored by PTO.  We had a blast last time we played. The cafeteria was packed, and we hope for another great turn-out.  Prior to Bingo, grades 3, 4, and 5 invite all parents to visit their students’ class for a look into helping your child be their personal best at school.  There will be information and examples of new academic expectations, the way understanding is assessed, and why teachers often do what they do.  This informational session begins at 5:30 on January 12th and is only for grades 3,4,5.  There will be a similar event in February for grades K-2.

As we renew our commitment to using Conscious Discipline as a schoolwide emotional learning program, I’d like to share with you a brief but descriptive article about Conscious Discipline and how it impacts schools.  Please see the attached from The Little School Development Group, and know that the leadership of KCSMA is dedicated to the full implementation of Conscious Discipline in every aspect of the school, including parent workshops.

Lastly, I would like to thank you all for your support and cooperation last Friday, as well as Monday and Tuesday with the inclement weather.  We were happy that everyone was able to get home safe and sound! I hope that the children were able to play in the snow and have some fun!

Hope to see you all tomorrow night!

Mrs. Frey

Principal's Monthly Scroll- October

Dear Parents and Families,

Happy Fall!

This unseasonably warm weather has resulted in increased numbers of sick students.  Please remind your child about hand-washing and other practices to decrease the spread of germs around school.

Thank you for completing the parent portion of the Georgia Parent Survey.  Participation is part of the overall CCRPI score for KCSMA so your input on the state survey is quite important.  We appreciate your time in completing questions designed to help me improve the level of service families receive when attending KCSMA.

In the next few weeks, teachers will be reaching out to ask for help from parents and family members as we implement focused remediation at all grade levels.  This remediation will provide one-on-one assistance to students who need an extra hand with organization, studying and preparing for tests, who will benefit from additional reading time with an adult, practicing spelling, phonics, math facts, etc.  If you have 20-30 minutes once or twice a week to help our Knights, we hope to hear from you.  Thanks in advance for helping students in such an important and meaningful way.

Congrats to our Chick-fil-A Teacher of the month, Stephanie Quakenbush, and our Assistant Teacher of the month, Ebony Scurry.  Both received a gift basket and a hug from the cow last week.  Students’ of the month received coupons for a free Chick-fil-A meal.  Classroom teachers announced Students of the Month via blogs/classroom communication sites.

Don’t forget to order your KCSMA Spirit Wear! We have some great new designs… Deadline to turn in your order form is Wednesday, November 9th.  Order forms are available in the Front Office.

The next Principal’s Coffee Talk will be help Wednesday, November 9th at 8:15am in the Dining Room.  The topic that Mrs. Frey will be covering is the State of the School Report.  We look forward to you all joining us for this!

Scholastic Book Fair

☆☆☆Calling all volunteers!☆☆☆

We have our first Scholastic Book Fair August 25-September 2, 2016.  Our students get so excited for our book fairs, and it takes many volunteers to provide the best experience for them.  The younger students need a lot of help filling out their wishlists and shopping.  It is one of the best volunteer opportunities because you get to meet a lot of other KCSMA parents, and the kids’ excitement makes it all worth it.

For every shift you work, your child’s teacher will receive a $5 gift card to the book fair to help fill their classroom library.  If you work a 4 or more hours at this fair, you will receive 20% off of your book fair purchases for this book fair.

Afternoon Carpool

Good Morning KCSMA Parents!

It was a great morning and we are so happy to see both new and returning families.  We have a couple of quick things that we would like to share and remind you of for carpool.

  • Kindergarten carpool will be begin at 1:20. This carpool is only for Kindergarten families.  IF you are a Kindergarten parent for this carpool you can come on the property at 1:15.  Only Kindergarten carpool families should be on the campus before 2.15.
  • “Traditional Carpool” begins at 2:45. Parents for “Traditional Carpool” cannot come on the property prior to 2:15. If you arrive prior to 2:15 you will be directed off the property by a staff member.   This includes not being able to line up and/or park in the parking lot.
  • Every car MUST have a PINK carpool tag hanging from the rear view mirror. If your tag is not hanging from the rearview mirror you will not be able to get your child.
  • If you are a Kindergarten or First Grade Parent with Older Siblings you MUST be in the LEFT Lane at all times upon entering the property
  • If you are a 2nd-5th Grade Parent you MUST be in the RIGHT Lane at all times upon entering the property
  • By following these rules, it will expedite and make your carpool experience a bit smoother.
  • Please have patience and understanding over the next couple of weeks as students learn their carpool numbers and we work out all the kinks.

Have a wonderful summer –   Mrs. Frey

Dear Parents and Students,

I have been very blessed to have been a part of Kennesaw Charter for the last 7 years.  This school has provided me an opportunity to work with some of the best teachers and staff members I will ever know.  These teachers dedicate themselves to the school and students so much more than anyone realizes.  I am proud of what we have done and what will be done moving forward to make this a special place.  I also cannot thank the parents enough for everything they do for the school and staff.  Without your support and trust, we would not be able to achieve the level of success that we have and will continue with moving forward.  In addition, I am so proud of the students and what they accomplish while they are here and after they leave.  Some of my proudest moments are seeing students I have taught, or worked with as an administrator, return and talk about how successful they are in many arenas in life.   As I have said before, my goal has been (and always will be) to enable the students to be successful now and have the tools to be leaders long after they leave.

With that said, it is with mixed emotions that I write this.  I will always look back on my time at Kennesaw Charter with admiration and appreciation, but I wanted to let all parents and students know that this will be my final year at KCSMA.  My family and I have decided it is time for me to seek other opportunities and gain experiences beyond these walls.  I am very excited about what the future holds for Kennesaw Charter.  Mrs. Frey and Ms. Hicks have some amazing things planned for the years to come.  This is now, and always will be, a special place for me.

Thank you for everything,

Jason Traster

The healthiest way to raise money at KCSMA

KCSMA is raising money for a new playground. In the past this event has done a great job of helping us turn Goals into an accomplished reality and we are hoping to do the same this year.

Important: Our school goal is to raise $30,000

A fun run is easy and healthy. Remember, small pledges add up.

  • The fun run will be held during the school day Friday, March 18, 2016. Schedules will be placed in mailboxes soon.
  • On the day of the fun run all students are encouraged to wear appropriate workout clothes and bring water to hydrate.
  • We invite parents and guardians to come cheer on their students. Vendors will be here selling yummy treats and offering support! PARENTS CANNOT PARTICIPATE IN THE RACE!
  • All students who turn in a pledge will receive a small token of appreciation.
  • Donations can be made online at
  • ALL students will participate in the race regardless of the amount of money they raised.
  • Pledge forms are due the day of the event.
  • Students should turn Forms and money into you that morning and then should be placed in your large class envelope.

Coach's Fun Run 2016

It’s time for the 3rd Annual COACH’S FUN RUN !!!

Last year the school raised a little over $21,000 for technology needs school-wide. This year the goal is $30,000 for playground improvements and climbing equipment for the playground. All students who participate receive a Fun Run bracelet. Every student who raises $40.00 receives a custom made FUN RUN t-shirt that can be worn on Fridays.

The classroom that raises the most money will go to Jumping World with Coach Ensor during the school day. If the school reaches its goal of $30,000, we’ve told the students Mrs. Frey will “cancel” school for a day.

(While we will call it cancelled, students still come to school and there will be stations set up around the school - activities, lunch, routine changes have been planned so the day will seem unlike a regular school day.  The “cancelled” day will be scheduled after Georgia Milestones testing.)

Additionally, the student who raises the most money will become Principal for the day school is “cancelled”.

Math Mania Design Challenge

MATH MANIA Design Challenge

Calling ALL students! KCSMA needs your help.

Our students need learning tools they can use to master all the math standards.  We think the best inventors for a learning tool are the kids who will use them (that’s YOU).  We are looking for tools that can be used by teachers or students in the classroom or even in the outdoor learning garden.   Get inspired, use your imagination, and design something that will help others master the math skills you have been learning all year.  Draw from your own experience and think about what would be a useful tool for a student like you or for a teacher to use in a demonstration.

Tools are due on March 15 and will be judged by families attending the MATH MANIA night that evening.  You need to include a written description explaining how the tool is used and be sure to include your name and teacher's name.

Happy New Year

Dear Parents and Families,

I am so happy to welcome you and your children back to school.  We are off to a cold but productive start to the new semester.  It’s almost time for the Lottery.  This year we are planning a Saturday event with refreshments and fun activities for all prospective lottery winners.

You will soon receive an Intent to Return to KCSMA form.  This form is important as we use it to determine how many students we can allow to enroll at our school through the lottery process in February. It also helps me plan how many classrooms/teachers we will need at every grade level for the coming year.  Please return your student’s Intent to Return form as soon possible.

If you are a believer in the Farmer’s Almanac there might soon be some icy, wintery weather in our future.  Please stay tuned to our website, Facebook, and local news channels for the most current school safety information.

Each year schools in Georgia receive a Climate Star Rating.  KCSMA historically scores extremely high, as the surveys reflect participation, support, and collaboration among parents, teachers and students.  Please take a moment to go to Georgia Parent Survey to complete the survey:

The Georgia Department of Education uses this information as part of the calculation for school success in charter and traditional public schools.  Your input is important to us.  If you do not have access to the Internet, I am happy to make a device available for you to use while on campus.

We hope you can attend the Governing Board meeting on January 21 when I will present the annual State of the School Report.  The meeting starts at 6:30 and will be in the Research and Development Center (Media Center).

If you have friends or relatives interested in attending KCSMA next year, please encourage them to go to our beautiful new website, and register today.

Wishing you well,

Mrs. Frey

Principal's Monthly Scroll

Dear Parents and Families,

October was a wonderful month here at KCSMA. The County Fair was a huge success! With your help, we raised $3,300 including the Quarter Wars change. Thank you to everyone who helped us plan, who volunteered, and to those who attended. Thanks to you, we are well on our way to making some much needed improvements to our playground areas and adding a new climbing apparatus to the big playground. The target goal for the playground improvements is $27,000. Including the amount we raised in last year's Fun Run, we expect to meet this goal before April 2016!

Here's some news we've been waiting a long time to be able to announce.
On Friday, October 30th KCSMA launched a brand new website. The website address is still However, the new look now fully represents our school, our incredible students, and our exceptional staff. The new site better reflects the excellent teaching and learning that goes on at KCSMA every day. I think you will be very pleased!

The testing updates are not what I had hoped they would be.
Traditionally, I present a State of the School report to the KCSMA Governing Board and to all parents in November. This report includes test results and comparisons with the county and state. It also includes information on the school's progress towards organizational goals and other goals for the upcoming year(s). The State of the School report will probably be given in Spring 2016 due to the delayed data. Meanwhile, if there are specific questions you'd like Mr. Traster or I to address during Board meetings or at the Parent Principal's Coffee, please send an email and we will certainly focus on your topic.

There will be a change in the school calendar for this January. Please note that January 27, 2016 will be an early release day. Students will be released at 11:45. The staff requires an additional afternoon/evening of professional learning related to STEM certification. The After School Program will still operate from the end of carpool until 6:30 pm.

Parents of third, fourth and fifth graders, please open the attachment about Science Fair on December 8th. It's never too soon to start planning!
Finally, Fall Break for this month is November 23-27. Please check the KCSMA PTO website often for exciting upcoming events.

Wishing you well,
Mrs. Frey

Friday fun at KCSMA

Friday fun at KCSMA...Morning meeting and a costume parade!!!

We hope everyone had fun at Bingo last night! During the PTO meeting, we elected Dety Ngassa as our new Co-President and Denise Babin as our new Co-Secretary. We now have a full board of officers. Welcome, Dety and Denise! The PTO got a sneak peek into a morning meeting at the school, today, as parents do not usually attend. The kids and teachers were so full of school spirit! We were impressed with how quiet and respectful the students were during the presentations. They sang, they danced, they shared compliment cards, and Mr. Monnier received a very special award. Superior Plumbing and The Marietta Daily Journal award an iPad Air to one teacher a week in Cobb County based on nominations by students and parents. Our very own fifth grade teacher Mr. Monnier was this week’s recipient. Congratulations, Mr. Monnier. Thank you @PlumbSuperior for giving Mr. Monnier an iPad! It was great to see him recognized.

STEM night was awesome!

Thank you to our crazy scientist, Mr. Donnelly, for your cool vacuum chamber demos! STEM night was a blast, and the kids (and parents) really enjoyed it. Thank you to Mrs. Green, Mr. Donnelly and Ms. Abraham for planning these nights for us. We appreciate all the teachers and staff who put in such a long day to stay and help with all of the STEM stations. You rock!
